Showcasing “Best Practices” for Poverty Alleviation

Showcasing “BEST PRACTICES” for Poverty Alleviation

On Wednesday, 11 December 2024, we will be hosting the first day of our 36th Annual Meeting of the Governing Council, as proposed by the Philippines. As part of our programme, a side event will be held from 14:00 to 16:00 CET to discuss developments in the commodity sector. This event will serve as a crucial platform for member countries to spotlight "best practices" in commodity sector development, share valuable insights, and discuss future plans to address the pressing challenges in this ever-evolving sector.

Poverty remains one of the most urgent issues of our time, and we recognize that many who are trapped in poverty cannot afford the luxury of long periods of trial and error in our efforts to help them. This is why the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) urges all 101 member states to use this forum to share their best practices for poverty alleviation—whether they are projects funded by CFC or not. By showcasing these successful initiatives, we aim to scale up ideas and innovations that can lift millions, if not billions, out of poverty.

The event is designed with four primary objectives:

  • First, member countries will spotlight their accomplishments in the commodity sector, emphasizing the transformative impact on local economies and poverty reduction efforts.
  • Second, we seek to foster a culture of collaboration by facilitating knowledge exchange among member countries. This is crucial in accelerating progress, as we collectively address the challenges faced by developing economies.
  • Third, the discussions will focus on the importance of impact investments in steering the commodity sector toward sustainable development. We will explore innovative approaches to catalyze positive change in the sector.
  • Lastly, the event will highlight the importance of humanizing value chains. Participants will discuss bridging the gap between the farm gate and the final price, with the goal of enhancing the incomes of smallholders, thereby fostering more equitable wealth distribution.

This event aims to not only showcase achievements but also provide a platform for collaboration, innovation, and the scaling of best practices to ensure that poverty alleviation becomes a collective, effective effort. All Governing Council meeting attendees, as well as delegates from member nations, business offices, industry stakeholders, and the media, are welcome to join the side event.
